Trekking to Mount Roraima - 10 days / 9 nights
Caracas – Puerto Ordaz – Santa Elena de Uairen - Roraima
Arrival Caracas. Reception at airport and transfer to our hotel. Hotel Ole Caribe (4*) or similar.
Caracas – Puerto Ordaz – Santa Elena de Uairen. Early in the morning transfer to airport for our flight to Puerto Ordaz. We then head towards Santa Elena de Uairen, in a sightseeing transfer through the rubber-seeking and gold mining towns of El Callao and Tumeremo. Stop for lunch on route (not included). We then continue through El Dorado with its famous prison camps, wind our way up the “Escalera”, and in the late afternoon reach the northern boundary of the mystic Gran Sabana. The eastern part of the Canaima National Park is known as the Gran Sabana, an area of clear rivers, romantic waterfalls and an endless tepuys, the oldest geological region in the world, estimated to be over 2,000 million years old. Overnight and dinner at Posada Los Pinos (standard posada).
River Tek / River Kukenan. From Santa Elena we head northbound, in 4x4 vehicle, to San Francisco de Yuruani, and from there on a sandy road to the Indian settlement of Paray-Tepuy. On the way we will have spectacular views of the savannah and the Tepuys (table-top mountains). After a light lunch we start our trek through the gentle hills of the savannah and over small creeks, and after 5 hours we arrive at our camp for the night, on the banks of the River Tek or River Kukenán. We can have a refreshing bath in the river before dinner! Lunch on route. Dinner at the camp.
Base Camp. After breakfast we continue our trek through the beautiful Gran Sabana landscape, and after approximately 5 hours we reach Base Camp, in a meadow alive with multicolour birds and fireflies at night. The glittering quartz wall of Mount Roraima rises directly in front of the camp. A very impressive sight! Lunch on route. Dinner at the camp.
The Summit. After breakfast we set off on a trail that crosses diagonally the Roraima wall. The narrow trail winds its way up through mountainous rainforest and small streams with an abundant flora and fauna of hummingbirds, orchids and brightly coloured flowers. After a while vegetation changes to pre-historic tree ferns and our trail takes us to a waterfall pouring down on us from the edge of a cliff hundreds of feet above. After a 5-hour trek, we arrive at the entrance to the summit, guarded by massive grey rocks, and emerge at the top! We set up camp protected by a rock ledge. The summit has a weather of its own: there are sudden storms at any time of the year and the sky is covered by heavy clouds without warning. Lunch on route. Dinner at the camp.
Summit.Breakfast. We have the whole day to explore the summit of Mount Roraima. We will head for the marker where Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana meet. We will walk through strange rock formations, surprisingly lush valleys, and places where the ground is covered with sparkling quartz crystals. Everywhere between the rock are small pools, and if we are lucky we will spot a strange black toad, endemic to Mount Roraima. The plant life is bizarre, and most species are unique to Mount Roraima, including several types of orchid and carnivorous plants. Lunch en route. Dinner at the camp.
River Tek. After breakfast we break up camp, and start our descent down to the River Tek (7 hours). Lunch on route. Dinner at the camp.
Santa Elena de Uairen. Breakfast. We trek back to Paray-Tepuy, and drive back to Santa Elena. Accommodation and dinner at Posada Los Pinos. Although this trek is not technically difficult, good fitness is required! Porters can be hired at an extra cost to carry personal luggage.
Santa Elena – Puerto Ordaz. Breakfast and return transfer to Puerto Ordaz for our flight back to Caracas. Transfer to Hotel Ole Caribe or similar.
Departure Caracas. Breakfast and transfer to international airport.
