Ciudad Bolívar and Puerto Ordaz, gateway to Canaima, Gran Sabana and Orinoco Delta. Ciudad Bolívar was founded in 1764 on a rocky elevation at the Orinoco river’s narrowest point, and therefore it was appropriately named Angostura (narrow). As a colonial port and headquarters of Simon Bolívar at a crucial time in the campaign for independence, Ciudad Bolívar is a city of great historic significance. The colonial architecture and cobbled streets around Plaza Bolívar and the cathedral are particularly attractive. Set on the southern bank of the Orinoco River, at its confluence with the Caroni River, the bustling city of Puerto Ordaz is the gateway to the Gran Sabana, the Orinoco Delta, and Canaima National Park. In Puerto Ordaz are La Llovizna and Cachamay parks with spectacular waterfalls.
